I knew that I would be back in Santa Barbara before the end of the month and I plan on kicking off the month of February with a bang. But before then I guess we should take care of unfinished business from last week. Not having been there, it is hard to tell, but by various accounts it was busy yet again a Pub Quiz. Team #11 "Danger Will Robinson, I Detect Jake & Chris On This Planet" won the overall score, but not the big jackpot and Team #7 Is The Any Hot Sauce In Here? won round for for the second time in the month. Epistolary Pub Quiz

Dearest Quiz Denizens,

I'm still a little in shock from missing what must have been an epic Quiz last week. I spent much of Wednesday night listening to a VC schlub from Google Shopping explain how Pinterest can help wineries sell wine and also dodging VP Joe Biden's secret service detail. But in the last several days I have heard several things about the night you all shared:

1. The questions were kind of hard as is befitting a night where the jackpot might approach a C-note per person.
2. The Substitute Quizmaster learned by round 3 that although awarding 1/3 points for questions seems like a benevolent act at the time, it only leads to heartache and confusion as the night progresses. It took me a around 2 years years to realize this, so it is obvious that she is roughly 800 times as smart as me.
3. Some people still cannot fathom that arguing about answers that are "almost right" (for example Flash Gordon does have soundtrack written by Queen but it wasn't released in the year that was asked about in the question) is a fruitless activity. Sigh; nerds will be nerds.

Several teams were in the mix, right up until the end, but when it was all said and done Team #14 We Are Worried If Wikipedia Goes Black, It Won't Come Back were the wire to wire leaders and also took down a sizable jackpot by selecting the white chip. I was ready to laugh uproariously if they selected the red chip (see facebook poll and comments here), but I guess congrats are in order. The new jackpot will begin anew and Interim Quizmaster Andrea will be in the house again next week, which will feature the categories below from the winners of round 4 - Team #15 Getting Blacked Out Drunk To Protest SOPA. I look forward to hearing about the hijinks of the January 25 Pub Quiz and look forward to being back with you on Feb 1.

I Need A Vacation

So I am taking one. Not really. I'm going to the scenic climes of San Francisco and Sacramento in each of the next two weeks and leaving you in the capable hands of a substitute QuizMistress - the incomparable Andrea McKenna. Be nice, she controls your fate while the jackpot is brimming with cash and there are only 3 tokens left in the bag.

Last week was full of excitement from the beginning. The bar was full more than an hour early. We ended up with 22 teams. Newer teams were winning rounds. The questions were kind of hard. And when the smoke cleared and dust settled, Team #13 Donut Bumping Guttersluts (the bar regulars team) won the overall score. This has not happened in the 6 years of Pub Quiz at OKR. They failed to win the overall score, but did take home 20% of the jackpot. The rest rollsover to this week.

Winter in Paradise

Not even the typical first week of January weather - warm and sunny and bright - seems to keep the crowd from growing. It was another full night with several very good performances by teams new and old. The last pub quiz of 2011 went of to much ballyhoo. There was a full house and a number of teams that were in contention for winning a round of the overall score. But when it was all over, Team # 11 Bag Street Bombers held on to narrowly beat Team #13 Steel Wool. While Team #11 did not win the big jackpot, they did win 20% of it. Holiday Quiz Time

Sorry for taking a while to get this up, but the holiday season is upon us and time is at a premium. Last week, way more teams than expected got together for our weekly Quiz adventure. There were many teams that got good scores, and we survived two complete ties for winning round scores. When it was all over except for the crying, Team #9 Bags in Toyland put up a pretty much unbeatable 37 out of 40 to win the overall score. They did not win the jackpot so it grows, ewhile the number of tokens in the black/purple bag dwindles.

Wow. I cannot believe how many people showed up to vie for Pub Quiz glory last night. Every round was pretty close and several teams acquitted themselves quite well. I'm still not sure what to do with bystanders who like to yell out the answers to the two or three questions they know on a given night, but since berating doesn't seem to dissuade them, I'm open to suggestions.

When the scores were tallied we had a tie for first place between Team #8 Birds of War Ca-Caw, Ca-Caw! and Team #13 Purple Bagger Soldier Spy. After a narrow tie-breaking question Team #8 pulled out the win, but did not win the big jackpot which is growing fast.

Thank you to all who were able to brave the windy condition last Wednesday and enjoy a lively round of Pub Quiz. So many teams did well it is quite nearly mind-boggling and I'm glad to see several newish teams continuing to strut their stuff.
