Last week's Pub Quiz was very interesting. I think it was the week with the most scoring parity by far - every team scored within 10 points of the top score - usually there a few teams that are almost 20 points off the lead. Also several of the typically great teams were surpassed by some of the teams that have been toiling in obscurity for a while. It was kind of nice to see. However, when it was all said and done Team #7 To Celebrate Cyber Monday We Bought Tim a Subsctriction to Nakedquizzes.com squeezed by some upstarts and claimed the overall score if not the jackpot. Team #9 Purple Is Your Destiny also flexed their muscle at the end and won round 4 in a four-way tiebreaker to earn the right to suggest these categories for round 3 of next week:

Making Up For Lost Time

Well, we had our third monthly bonus drawing last week and for the first time ever a team was not in attendance to claim their free prizes. However, Team #1 from Pub Quiz #4 of November continued their sudden dominance and won the bonus drawing the week after their trifecta. Very unprecedented.

As far as last week's quiz went, Murphy's Law was in effect for most of the night. The quiz master didn't arrive until after 7pm due to inexplicable traffic, and then there was a three-way tie for the overall score. Team #5 Breasts & Thighs, Jake & Chris Love This Holiday were able to outguess Team #8 We're Brining Our Turkey in a Purple Bag and Team # 10 Real Housewives of Goleta Reunited Without All of the Riff-Raff on the tiebreaking question of "How many bottles of wine does the quizmaster currently have in the trunk of his car?" (the answer was 66 - I get thirsty). Team #5 did not win the big jackpot and it will rollover. Team #10 can take solace in their privilege of naming the categories for round 3 of next week. Every so often a long-suffering team breaks through and achieves something miraculous or at least unprecedented and unexpected. It happened last week at Pub Quiz when a team that has always been vaguely competitive with very little to show for it in the way of compensation, actually pulled of the rare trifecta of winning round 4, the overall score in a tiebreaker, and winning the big jackpot. They were so excited that it didn't even bother them that it was the first week of the jackpot and it was not so big. So congratulations to Team #1 Ram It Home!, for their long awaited victory. Pub Quiz has finally reached the dark and chilly stages of it's cycle. Last week however there were about 15 teams that braved the cold and drear to compete for a pretty nice jackpot. In the end, Team #2 Zach's Birthday Wish: Tiger Woods Ball Washer beat out 3 other teams by an entire point to claim the overall score and even selected the correct token to win the jackpot. Charity Pub Quiz Recap

A total of 10 teams participated Thursday night, collectively raising close to $400 for DAWG.  A HUGE shout-out and thanks goes to the participants, and the owners and staff at OKR for making the evening a success. As a bonus, each team that attended the charity pub quiz will get and extra entry in the regular Pub Quiz monthly drawing. It pays to play.

The teams were mostly familiar quizzers, though about 3 teams were new, and there were a few participants who hadn’t done a quiz in quite some time, but managed to get back into the routine nicely.

The teams bravely handled questions on running, dogs, and a variety of topics related to England and Guy Fawkes Day.  One of the highlights was round 4, where 7 out of the 10 teams managed to tie with a score of seven.  Of course, Team 2, Rock Hard Cock, and Team 8, These Are All Yellow, submitted the same guess for song length (and both teams were the closest), leading to our only Tie-Breaker Question of the night.

Team 1, Our Cats Are Mad We’re Here, won 2 rounds as well as the overall grand prize, Team 10, Oh my DAWG, Her Butt is So Big, won the best team name prize, and team 5, NOGSTIVE¸ (no, I have no idea what the team name means) were a fun-loving group winning the consolation prize.

And nobody is there to hear it does it actually happen? We almost got to find out last week. But for the few and proud that actually were in attendance, we were treated to a very competitive and high scoring night. Team #11 Tomorrow Night Old Kings Road is Doin' It DAWGy-Style won the overall score in a tie-breaker over Team #4 Measure B Fails, 45ft. Jake & Chris Relieved, but failed to pick the correct token. Only four of them remain in the Purple Bag of Goodness and the jackpot is growing (slowly).

Monthly Drawing FTW, Again

Last night we had our second ever monthly bonus drawing and it was a bit of a thrill to randomly reward a team just for playing. This time it was Week 4's Team #5 Green Bud Packers who were blessed with a bottle of Marsannay Rouge and $20 per player. Since they were a team of 3, there were a few more bottles left over and they went to Teams 9, 14, &18, respectively. Yay for free stuff!

As far the Quiz part of the night was concerned, it was deja vu all over again. Team #17 Northwest Purple Baggage Claim won a narrow victory, but failed to win the big jackpot and Team #16 Underdog Overachievers muddled through the first three rounds before winning round 4 for the second week in a row. Computer Love

Last week's Pub Quiz was rip-roaring with a dash of spice due to the presence of many new players. Although many of them got a cold dose of reality when they were faced with the vast variety in the musical selections and the peripatetic drift to the trivia questions, I think that if they hang in there and perhaps bring a few friends to round out their teams, then they will do just fine in coming weeks.

Even with all of the new faces, however, it is obvious that experience counts for something as veteran Team #10 Half Purple, Half in the Bag edged out regulars Team #3 Thank You Balloon Boy Saga For Providing the Cheapest, Easier Halloween Costume Idea This Year by .5 points to win the overall total. The big jackpot rolls over to next week when we will also have our monthly bonus drawing.

Good to know that rain does not keep people away as much as fire. Last night saw a pretty sassy crowd in the house. I know it was my kind of night when I was accosted by someone who used words like 'modernity' and 'interiority' to explain why I would like the book they were reading/class they were taking. I love that stuff.

We had a very competitive quiz with a tie for first in overall score, with another team perhaps actually having the highest score that was overlooked due to an accounting error. (Don't worry, they were compensated.). In any case, Team #19 Barely Purple, Dave's Not Here emerged from the tiebreaker, but failed to win the big jackpot. It will rollover to next week.

The quality of last week's quiz far surpassed the total interest in it. Those teams that were in attendance were treated to some good questions and a quick evening. It was a very competitive night with the top team scoring only 8 points more than the bottom team. Parity at last. In the end Team #12 UN Sanctioned Groping and Grinding aka Reese & The Kicks @ SoHo tomorrow at 10pm parlayed wins in the last two rounds to win a narrow victory.
