Monthly Drawing FTW, Again

Last night we had our second ever monthly bonus drawing and it was a bit of a thrill to randomly reward a team just for playing. This time it was Week 4's Team #5 Green Bud Packers who were blessed with a bottle of Marsannay Rouge and $20 per player. Since they were a team of 3, there were a few more bottles left over and they went to Teams 9, 14, &18, respectively. Yay for free stuff!

As far the Quiz part of the night was concerned, it was deja vu all over again. Team #17 Northwest Purple Baggage Claim won a narrow victory, but failed to win the big jackpot and Team #16 Underdog Overachievers muddled through the first three rounds before winning round 4 for the second week in a row. Computer Love

Last week's Pub Quiz was rip-roaring with a dash of spice due to the presence of many new players. Although many of them got a cold dose of reality when they were faced with the vast variety in the musical selections and the peripatetic drift to the trivia questions, I think that if they hang in there and perhaps bring a few friends to round out their teams, then they will do just fine in coming weeks.

Even with all of the new faces, however, it is obvious that experience counts for something as veteran Team #10 Half Purple, Half in the Bag edged out regulars Team #3 Thank You Balloon Boy Saga For Providing the Cheapest, Easier Halloween Costume Idea This Year by .5 points to win the overall total. The big jackpot rolls over to next week when we will also have our monthly bonus drawing.

Ebb and Flow

Good to know that rain does not keep people away as much as fire. Last night saw a pretty sassy crowd in the house. I know it was my kind of night when I was accosted by someone who used words like 'modernity' and 'interiority' to explain why I would like the book they were reading/class they were taking. I love that stuff.

We had a very competitive quiz with a tie for first in overall score, with another team perhaps actually having the highest score that was overlooked due to an accounting error. (Don't worry, they were compensated.). In any case, Team #19 Barely Purple, Dave's Not Here emerged from the tiebreaker, but failed to win the big jackpot. It will rollover to next week.

The quality of last week's quiz far surpassed the total interest in it. Those teams that were in attendance were treated to some good questions and a quick evening. It was a very competitive night with the top team scoring only 8 points more than the bottom team. Parity at last. In the end Team #12 UN Sanctioned Groping and Grinding aka Reese & The Kicks @ SoHo tomorrow at 10pm parlayed wins in the last two rounds to win a narrow victory. The jackpot, however, was not claimed and will rollover. But all 11 teams now have a chance to win in the end of month bonus drawing. Here are the categories for next week's round 3:

Monthly Drawing FTW

Although it kinda seemed like nobody was paying attention, and we missed the drama of having an absent team win, this idea of a monthly drawing for which all teams that have attended over the course of the month are eligible, is a good one. It will continue. To reiterate:

1. Every team that plays in a month gets a chance to win on the last Wednesday of the month.
2. At least one person from that team must be present and playing for that team to be allowed to win.
3. The winning team gets $20 per person and 6 bottles of wine.

Super close Pub Quiz contest last night. Despite having a sore tooth and nearly loosing my voice trying to shout over the inexplicable 20 or so noisy nonparticipants, I think that every thing went well. It's getting dark earlier and the baseball playoffs are days away. Oscar-caliber movies are starting to get released. And Pub Quiz continues. Last week was capital fun with lots of better performances than I expected. Team #9 We Are Witnessing the Birth of A Psycho-Sexual Killer used all of the karma they must have earned by avoiding the obvious Kanye West team name to earn a well-deserved overall score victory. They do need some help in the token drawing department and the jackpot will rollover.

Not with a bang but a whimper

So I guess the full and wild Pub Quiz that appeared out of nowhere was a bit of an aberration, because last week was mellow and quiet with a paltry 15 teams. In the feast or famine world of Pub Quiz, maybe that's just the way it goes. So I am starting a once a month drawing for $120 and six bottles of wine that will occur on the last wednesday of each month. All teams for the month will be eligible to win if at least 1 member is present and participating at the quiz on the last day of the month. You could conceivable have 5 entries in the drawing if you came on all five wednesdays in a month. Maybe that will give added incentive to teams that finish just out of the money but still enjoy attending Pub Quiz for sheer enjoyment. And people will know that on the last wednesday of each month the crowd might be a little bigger because of the drawing. So congrats to all 15 teams from last week - you each have one entry in the drawing. This also means that you need to fill out the names of your players each week on your signup sheets.

Pub Quiz Flash Mob?

Does anybody have a reasonable theory about why there were twice as many teams at Pub Quiz immediately after the giveaway of a big jackpot? The bar was nearly full at 6:30. I know that Allan Breed's Birthday Extravaganza accounted for an extra two teams worth of people, but I saw at least 3 teams leave when they saw the crowd and realized that competition would be fierce and the bar would be hot. In any case despite the crowd and the climate, I'd like to point out that Pub Quiz is much more exciting and fun when there is a big group vying for trivia dominance.

And although winning the overall score without winning any one round is not really anything like dominance, I think that Team #22 Puppy Surprise for Breakfast should be commended for outsmarting, outplaying, or outlasting the other 25 teams to win. Thy do need to work on their jackpot token selecting, though, and a pretty big total will rollover to next week.
