Kim and I got our Marriage License today. The hardest part was actually finding the right place for it (the County Clerk's offices, which share space in the landmark Santa Barbara Courthouse, was under construction). The gentleman who assisted us was quite helpful, so 30 minutes and $77 later, we left with all of the paperwork necessary to get hitched.
Most of the forms we filled out made sense to some degree, and the fact that we had to swear and sign an affidavit that we were telling the truth on our application also seems firmly grounded in reason. What surprised me, however, was the fact that we both had to sign a separate affidavit swearing that we received a copy of the booklet Your Future Together - health information you need to know. What a strange piece of literature this is. Aside from some sadly relevant warnings about the dangers of HIV/AIDS, and what to do if domestic violence is affecting you (my advice: don't marry the jerkwad), there are many other, arguably more peripheral issues addressed, such as the need to increase one's Folate intake to reduce the chances of birth defects (p.13), when you should consider talking to a "Genetic Counselor" (p. 17), and a super-fun gallery of "infectious diseases that can hurt your baby" (pp. 20-23).
I'll leave you with a particularly compelling excerpt regarding how to prevent a Listeriosis infection:
Avoid soft cheeses (e.g., Mexican-style, Feta, Camembert and blue-veined cheese). There is no need to avoid hard cheeses, cream cheese, cottage cheese or yogurt.
