I thought it might interest you and your Finnish friends to know the origin of this phrase. In medeival times, May was the month for a bath. The family heated one large tub of water, and then took baths in the same tub in the following order: Man, Woman, children in order of age. Since the baby was last and the water was the dirtiest for the poor little tyke, there was a real risk of "throwing out the baby with the bath water." And no, I didn't get this information from the Kunstkamera Museum!
